almost 2 years agoi would choose a few of these, is there no way i can choose more than one option...
i think ALL of the skills and qualities above would be what i would look for in support from someone

almost 2 years agoI think all of the above qualities would be needed to ensure that staff that are working within the Summer Programme are doing the best they possibly can for those involved. It's essential that they are someone that believes in the participants otherwise they will become demotivated and not want to join in. As well as both needed to be a good listener and communicator being required for the sake... Read more

almost 2 years agoI spent my summers volunteering abroad in various countries around Europe... it was a great way of combining travelling and volunteering, and meeting some great friends along the way. im still in contact with many of them, and have been back to spend some time 'lounging around / hanging out with friends' with them too...
glad to see people are interested in making money too... in my time in england... Read more

almost 2 years agoI'm currently on the NCS cause and i've met a couple of retired athletes. I admired them all and really respected their stories! I am looking forward to doing the rest of the project. Doing our community project is going to be exciting and I hope it really reaches out too people!
What’s the connection between the Big Society and the government’s vision for higher education, school leavers and graduate skills? The answer is a “green gap year” for students.
Imagine the energy of teenage volunteers able to complete community service, help with projects to address climate change and contribute towards sustainability. This could be delivered through a voluntary period of National... Read more

over 1 year agoJust 3 questions; how is it funded? how are you going to market it so as many young people can think about applying for it? is there going to be some funds for young people who need extra support so they can take part?

over 1 year agoHi Myriam,
It's in its early days.....but I would hope that it could be marketed widely e.g. through schools & existing orgs like Community Service Volunteers; funding - possibly Government, chartities or businesses....or a mix!
I'll think on the extra support! It's a work in progress.

Heres somthing I have just came across on the web an interesting approach to social housing allocation by Barnet council…
Allocation based upon community contributions and volunteering … (see link pg26 / 27)
http://www.barnet.gov.uk/allocations-scheme-the-full-rules-march-2011.pdf
This made for very interesting reading, it made me think of a number of questions...
1) Is this approach somthing... Read more

almost 2 years agoI think this is interesting. At first I thought, no way, housing should be based on need, some people can't volunteer and after all volunteering is VOLUNTARY.
But thinking about it I wonder, if you had a certain percentage assigned this way, maybe that would be a positive thing for that community or estate. Those who volunteer are more likely to support local community projects, you need people... Read more

almost 2 years agoHi ruth, thanks for your comment.. its interesting to hear about your aunt moving to the new estate, and being a welcoming figure in the community.
It would be great to hear if anyone has come across any other councils which are running simular schemes... ???
Advice needed on a role title so we are throwing it open to the community! Thanks for voting and if you have any comments/ alternative role titles, let us know in the box below.
Thanks

My project is to becoming the ARK Angel, (Acts of Random Kindness), for your community, and go around your town commiting simple, happy acts, from giving up your seat on the bus to leaving 20p's in phonebooths, to quote the ad, every little helps, and it can really brighten a person's day.

almost 2 years ago@Joe, I think you largely misunderstand the banking system. Banks don't just key in an increase to their own bank account. They just lend out more money than they have creating more money upon repayment of the debt.
You may think this is wrong, but it is vital for a strong growing economy and without it banks would just be safes. Places to store your money. There would be no loans. The only people... Read more

Building the Big Society
Community based projects and local social enterprises have been run for many years. However, a malaise in local activism and increasing centralisation under the previous Government has led to the development of the Big Society approach. This has the potential to improve local services and take citizen power to the next level.
Much has been said over the last 18 months... Read more

about 2 years agoI volunteer in one of the areas where Big Society could actually work very well - gardening. It's not a task that people would worry about being carried out by volunteers, unlike roles related to things like health and education. It's also task that people actually enjoy doing, so would be willing to do for free. And an army of Big Society volunteers working in our parks, community gardens and... Read more

about 2 years agoi think your last sentance says it all ...
I think Lord Wei's move to volunteer less is understandable as he has a young family (but he obviously used the wrong words to explain his move),
However he highlights a huge issue with cutting funding, and about expecting too much from people.
He is a smart man who has set up a wonderful social enterprise in TeachFirst and seems to want to make a difference to Britain. WHY OH WHY WAS HE NOT... Read more

over 2 years agoTotally agree Jon... great comments!
I dont blame Lord Wei for wanting to spend more time with the family. Plus good on him for stepping down and saying i have to get a paid job in order to pay the bills, what happens if you dont pay the bills, you get surrounded in debt... the other point that could be raised here, is he actually did come out and say, i need to get a job to cover my bills and... Love the mini-olympics idea! It would be a great day in the local community, as well as maybe even inspiring our next generation of Mo Farahs!
Kathy Marshall
There's something a bit depressing about celebrating a major sporting event with art instead.
VHenry Mackintosh
how so Kathy?
Kathy Marshall
Well I don't imagine Usain Bolt took up running because he saw a nice mural.
The Olympics may end up feeling fairly meaningless for most of the UK, because most people won't be able to afford to go. So having art projects in cities around the country will probably seem pointless to most residents. Especially in future years, when the Olympics just seems like a distant memory and the art projects... Read more

Sadly I have to agree with Kathy Marshall at least we can watch it on the television and not worry about the walk to the toilets!
