Rui Jorge's Activity
hey guys,
Here is a video of me giving some words of wisdom to inspire young people to not only make the most of education, but also engage in volunteering in order to gain transferable skills and be better prepared to embark on a successful future.
Though it covers 3 topics, i wish for it to be included under the "build their career" category.
Thanks,
Rui

a huge challenge for the young people today is how to live a good and happy life. In fact, what is a good or happy life right? Times seem uncertain for many, communities broken down, role models are not visible and no one seems to know what to do. There is a lot of pressure, everyone seems to be rushing, complianing and young people want to embark on a successful career but finding it difficult... Read more

about 2 years agoHi Rui,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on volunteering and young people, and welcome to the Big Society's Big Mouth website! What do you think about the point people make about being to busy to volunteer? Some of our members have been having a lively discussion about this proposition here: http://goo.gl/CMqVP Be good to hear your thoughts!
Thanks

almost 2 years agoHi Joan, just wanted to say that i really appreciate the accusatory comment. I have been very lucky to receive all the support i have done so far and i'm really grateful for every single person's vote. It's a shame how it takes just one person to dampen the spirit of what i thought was a friendly competition.

‘We’re too busy to be full time volunteers’
What do you think about the proposal from the stylist magazine this week that people have no time to be involved in the Big Society?
Do you agree that ‘to be a decent volunteer you need to have spare time and energy, an infinitely redeployable skillset and money to allow you time off paid work to do it’ or do you think it’s an excuse for people that... Read more

about 2 years agoI think its an absolute joke. Ultimately, if we all weren't volounteering - SOMEBODY ELSE WOULD BE PAID TO. Is travel costs and food expenses all they think is holding us back from achieving great things? To offer expenses is simply insulting. Nevermind rent, bills, clothes, haircuts, toiletries etc. - we're young! We dont need those.... Companies have tightened their purse strings, a lot of migrants... Read more

about 2 years agoI totally agree with what's been said so far. I havn't been able to find a job in childcare in my area and i wanted to do a course at university which involved a work placement, if i got onto the course i was going to do the placement voluntry, but i have a house and young child to pay for and being in university you dont get any help or benifits to pay housing and living costs. i am now pregnant... about 2 years agoAll you need to be a volunteer is enthusiasm!
I have managed to fit my volunteering around full time work, although a lot of this has been based at home - organising events, contacting businesses etc. However, I do find it a struggle to fit it all in and always wish I could do more! I don't drive, which restricts me to travelling by bus, and considering the bus service is about to be cut, it will... Read more -

about 2 years agoIt appears to me that everyone is busy chasing trying to make their dreams come true which is great, im no exception. I totally understand the people are going through hard times, especially young people. As someone who champions volunteeirng within my community, I dont say to people " you must volunteer" , instead i share my experiences and illustrate how it helped me. I'm a mere messegner, after... This just nearly made me cry. EVERYONE involved in spending decisions should watch it.

over 2 years agoCheck out Jamie's video above, including interviews with young people on jobs and youth employment. Get involved in the debate around youth employment:
What is your current employment status?
Is having a job a priority to you?
Do you think National Minimum wage is enough? -
Rui Jorge Octavio
about 2 years agoi work part-time and having a job is definately priority for me in order to live. NMW is enough, if people want to gain more than they will need to develop skills that will increase their value. Engage in personal development and volunteering can help. check out my video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRTKSinkOO0
