How is it that the Government are trying to promote Volunteering in their new 'Big Society' Initiative yet they are cutting funding for the Vinvolved and Vtalent projects which is all about Young People Volunteering?????
I am loosing my entire Youth Service because of these cuts. I have been a volunteer at Carterton Youth Centre for the best part of four years, but I wouldn't be able to run my... Read more

For lots of students, EMA is the difference between staying in education and dropping out - a Guardian survey shows that 7 in 10 16-18 year olds from poor family say they'd drop out without it.
Tomorrow, the NUS will lobby Parliament as MPs vote on this massively contraversial issue. Will you be there?

over 2 years agoI agree with both comments. Like Sonali said, EMA was pretty much a lifeline for both my sisters and myself and it paid for my food and travel costs to go to college (transports wasn't free back then!!) I'm seriously concerned that without it, my younger brother won't see the point in putting himself through a part time job just to then take a loan and spend even more money on unviersity fees (my... over 2 years agoHey Philip when you say the government should be more vocal about what it plans to replace EMA funding with - are there actually any plans to replace it?

over 2 years agoHey, to be honest I'm not too sure, I thought there was speculation that they would use at least some of the EMA money as scholarships or something that would encourage YP from low income backgrounds to stay in further education.

over 2 years agoHi Philip - The plan is to replace EMA with an enhanced discretionary learner support fund which will be managed by schools, colleges and training providers. The Department for Education is holding consultations with school, college and training organisation representatives to develop the arrangements but the funding is significantly less than it was for EMA. Look here for more info http://tinyurl... Read more

about 2 years agoThe Government has just annouced the replacement for EMA - a £180 million bursary scheme targetted at the most vulnerable 16-19 years olds. EMA was worth £560m. Have a look at the details here - http://tinyurl.com/ema-replacement. How will the new plans affect you?

over 2 years agoHi Alexander - From September you might be able to get help through an enhanced discretionary learner support fund which is replacing EMA. It will be managed by schools, colleges and training providers and it will be up to them to decide who is eligible - more info here http://tinyurl.com/6f4de2z. There's also info about help with travel costs on direct.gov - http://tinyurl.com/6fuhal5

I'm really sorry to hear about the issues you are having. It sounds as though you've been doing something really worthwhile and it's such a shame that your not getting enough support. It seems to be the story across the board when it comes to the voluntary sector, and some people have a strange perception that because people don't get paid for their time it doesn't cost anything to keep it going... Well exactly.... If they are going to make cuts they need to look at maintaining financial support for the premises, bills etc. and then look at designating the HUB workers certain youth centres to overlook and act as a line manager or something so that it could encourage people to actually want to volunteer in our youth centres. Perhaps even look at providing training so that the volunteers can... Read more

There's a group of MPs doing an inquiry into youth services who want to hear what young people (aged 13-25) have to say about youth services outside of school in their area. The Education Select Committee has teamed up with The Student Room to ask about your experiences. Go to http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/Parliament_wants_your_view to tell them what you think. Your comments will contribute... Read more

I've been apart of a v-talent group working with young adults with learning disabilities and it has given me beneficial experience to provide me with direction. So therefore when i found out that V were not being funded anymore my opinion is a lot of young people who are unsure of their strengths will miss out on a great oportunity to volunteer which will be a big shame. they want youngsters to...
