Over the last few months I’ve watched with interest the growing participation in Big Society’s Big Mouth but more importantly, the emerging themes and concerns of participants. The contributions have been magnificent, thought provoking and challenging. I hope to comment on some of the dominant issues as the project comes to its natural end. The first topic I want to reflect on is the high level... Read more

almost 2 years agoNatalie don't despair it happens to everyone! But you are right is a massive circle you have the correct paper certifcates but not the work experince to go with them becuase you were in college getting the paper!

almost 2 years agoYes it is hard when you get stuck in that loop - it happened to me. I wanted to do media but that is SO about who you know, even to get work experience, and I didn't know anyone. In the end I did some volunteering with a youth magazine and ended up getting a job. So maybe volunteering helps to iron out some of the unfairness that seems to go with work experience and placements?

almost 2 years agoHi
Would just like to update this, after asking the question to some young people, here are some answers I've received.
What I asked.
"Quick question for you. We hear employers are really concerned for those young people who appear not to be ready for or interested in work.
They say young people are rejecting work.
Is this true? Any of you looking for job and want/interested to work? "

over 1 year agoI'm reading back through some old topics. Is that a real question or one to cause debate? Most people don't exactly choose to have no job or education, it just gets forced onto them whether they like it or not.

over 1 year agoI agree with Kathy Marshall being a NEET or unemployed is not a choice, you are unemployed/NEET because you have no choice!
My project is to becoming the ARK Angel, (Acts of Random Kindness), for your community, and go around your town commiting simple, happy acts, from giving up your seat on the bus to leaving 20p's in phonebooths, to quote the ad, every little helps, and it can really brighten a person's day.

almost 2 years ago@Joe, I think you largely misunderstand the banking system. Banks don't just key in an increase to their own bank account. They just lend out more money than they have creating more money upon repayment of the debt.
You may think this is wrong, but it is vital for a strong growing economy and without it banks would just be safes. Places to store your money. There would be no loans. The only people... Read more

I am coming to the end of the vtalent year programme with Doncaster Youth Service, and have found it to be an amazing experience, giving me so much. Whilst helping the local Youth Service, I've met a great bunch of people, both on the programme themselves, and other workers. It's just a great shame that the project is coming to an end after a 2-year run, not to be repeated for the foreseeable future... Read more

over 2 years agoHi, I am on the V Talent Year with the British Youth Council and it’s a blast! I could not describe the opportunities that this work experience has given me! It is a real shame that other young people aren't going to get this in the future as it’s really helping me build a career and given me time to think about my own personal development! This type of scheme is what the government should be investing... Read more

over 2 years agoHi Simon and Myriam - it's great to hear that you've enjoyed your v talent year experience. This full-time volunteering project has helped young people achieve some great results - with 74% of participants progressing into further education, training or employment and 94% getting a level 2 qualification. v would love to be able to continue the v talent year programme - but unfortunately there are... over 2 years agoThanks for your video Elliott- There's a lot of discussion at the moment about how to engage young people in politics, you mentioned lowering the voting age to engage young people and let them have their say...what do people think? Should you be able to vote at 16 if you can get married, pay taxes or join the army at the same age?
-
Hannah J Wright
over 2 years agoI think someone needs to pick a lane with 16 and 17 year olds. Are they adults or not? At the moment it seems at best inconsistent - how can you not let people vote if you're taking tax off them and letting them join the army? Doesn't seem very democratic to me...

over 2 years agoJust picking up the dig about the media and the actions of politicians; I want politicians to admit the bad points about their proposals as well as the good, and to not have half of their energy devoted on public image. For example the policy the coalition government recently scrapped concerning the privatisation of forests; turns out that many of our forests are already privatised and an inderpendent... Read more
This just nearly made me cry. EVERYONE involved in spending decisions should watch it.
A volunteer from KICFM - 2 years unemployed and suffering health problems - asks: "What am I going to do when the radio station shuts down and when my counselling service shuts down... what am I going to do?"

What is wrong with this goverent? There still letting bankers get huge bonuses. Making good people redunant; they dont know when to stop cutting jobs. Whats the point in working, if benifits are as good, if not better then the money you recieve. High consel tax but massive savings on public services. Cutting police, nhs and fire. Why pay for a servies when there not fully provided; etc (less police... Read more

over 2 years agoHmm... more tax is always controversial - but thought you might like this plan to tax bankers? Robin Hood Taxes would take from the richest in society and give to those who need it. The main ideas on the table are a tax on financial transactions, a bank levy and a tax on profits and bonuses http://robinhoodtax.org/
What do you think?

about 2 years agoThe Robin Hood Tax: A Global tax on the Pound. One of the worst, single ideas, since Slavery.
1) Taking billions out of the private sector will mean only one thing. Taking jobs out of the private sector. A huge proportion of the money raised by the tax will just have to be spent caring for the people that lost their jobs because of the tax. Ridiculous!
2) Watch our Stock Market Crash. When it... Read more
Following the uprising in Tunisia, the Egyptian people have taken to the streets in an attempt to bring down their government. Demonstrations were planned and promoted on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter- both of which have been periodically blocked in Egypt (the government denies any involvement in this! cough cough). What are your thoughts on Britain's media coverage of the... Read more

over 2 years agoIt is very interesting to see a united, collective youth movement (with tools such as social media) making a huge difference- something which I feel the UK is lacking! Here's a thought from Nelson Mandela: "You might think you are powerless, but if all the children of Britain act together you can be more powerful than any government".

over 2 years agoI was lucky enough to visit Egypt last year and meet some youth activists there.
The youth there have some big problems - there's a "youth bulge" which means there are suddenly way more young people there than there ever has been before, so not enough services, jobs etc - I think about half of the population under 25 and unemployment is off the scale. So maybe it's easier for them to take on the... Read more

In 2009 I decided I wanted to connect with people locally to swap skills, but couldn't find a way to do so quickly, so I launched a website called Localskillswap. We now have 42 different groups across the country with over 400 members. If there isn't a group near you, you can just invite 6 of your friends to join you in setting one up. You can list all your skills (there are over 900 to choose... Read more

what a fantastic idea! I've just had a look at your website- it's great. what do you find the most common skills are people need in their local area? -
Katrina Gillard
over 2 years agoSurprisingly there is no particular pattern, however marketing and advertising are skills in demand, mainly to promote small businesses. If anyone out there has these skills, it would be worth registering. Also, various programming skills have come up quite often.
