Clare's Activity

Could we lobby for an initiative whereby Supermarkets throwing away food that is mis-shapen or simply passes its display-until date, are encouraged instead to donate this food to homeless shelters as opposed to simply binning it?

Poll question
There should be a law passed to oblige supermarkets to donate leftover food to homeless shelters & food distribution charities.

agreed. changing consumer attitude (and supermarket owner/food outlets could do to change too). raising awareness of poverty in the uk is important. The trussell trust, the food charity is a vital link for people who have no food due to various reasons such as job loss low pay, difficulties meeting the rent/mortgageand so on

I would like it to be illegal for supermarkets to lock their bins or pour bleach in them!

I have done a little research into why this isn't happening currently. Supermarkets fear that if someone were to become ill as a result of ingesting their unwanted food then they would be liable to potential huge law suits. So for it to move forward, there would almost have to be legislation regarding no legal action be taken against the Supermarkets if someone were to fall ill as a result of eating... Read more

Hi David sorry for the late reply. Have you seen the charity fareshare? http://www.fareshare.org.uk/ They seem to get surplus food from supermarkets and the food industries. Some of the places I volunteer with use this food. It's a really great scheme!

I heard that the supermarkets are worried that people who skip food will sue them if they are poisoned and also I heard they won't give away food... Read more

‘We’re too busy to be full time volunteers’
What do you think about the proposal from the stylist magazine this week that people have no time to be involved in the Big Society?

Do you agree that ‘to be a decent volunteer you need to have spare time and energy, an infinitely redeployable skillset and money to allow you time off paid work to do it’ or do you think it’s an excuse for people that... Read more

I think its an absolute joke. Ultimately, if we all weren't volounteering - SOMEBODY ELSE WOULD BE PAID TO. Is travel costs and food expenses all they think is holding us back from achieving great things? To offer expenses is simply insulting. Nevermind rent, bills, clothes, haircuts, toiletries etc. - we're young! We dont need those.... Companies have tightened their purse strings, a lot of migrants... Read more

I totally agree with what's been said so far. I havn't been able to find a job in childcare in my area and i wanted to do a course at university which involved a work placement, if i got onto the course i was going to do the placement voluntry, but i have a house and young child to pay for and being in university you dont get any help or benifits to pay housing and living costs. i am now pregnant... Read more

All you need to be a volunteer is enthusiasm!
I have managed to fit my volunteering around full time work, although a lot of this has been based at home - organising events, contacting businesses etc. However, I do find it a struggle to fit it all in and always wish I could do more! I don't drive, which restricts me to travelling by bus, and considering the bus service is about to be cut, it will... Read more

It appears to me that everyone is busy chasing trying to make their dreams come true which is great, im no exception. I totally understand the people are going through hard times, especially young people. As someone who champions volunteeirng within my community, I dont say to people " you must volunteer" , instead i share my experiences and illustrate how it helped me. I'm a mere messegner, after... Read more
