I could not believe my eyes when I read this article saying that a student had been allowed to take an ipod into an ALevel exam becuase it helps them concentrate! The article says the school had to BUY the ipod for the pupil and upload the songs to make sure that they didnt have answer in them. I don't carew whether it's just classicla music playing with no lyrics, the whole idea is ridiculous... Read more

Hi Rebecca, this is interesting. For health reasons, my sister needed special arrangements to take her exams, including taking them in a separate room, having breaks, snacks and sometimes a scribe. One time the school failed to properly make these special arrangements which meant she had to sit in a large exam hall and it negatively affected her grade because she is very sensitive to noise.

I agree don't make the mistake of assuming that everyone is like you as I have dyslexia and was allowed extra time, separate room and short breaks during exams. But you would not believe how long it can take to write on website and comment online sometimes as I have to recheck everything I write as people are so judgemental of spelling and grammar
    erros.

Do pushy middle class parents ever stop finding new ways to try and hide the fact their kids just aren't very academic?

Dyslexia ,ADHD, ASD, Dyspraxia and other Specific Learning Difficulties do not mean that someone is not academic! It means that the way their brain process information and think is different to most Neurotypical people.

Another great question! There's a guest blog post you might find interesting suggesting it was a good idea:

I agree that it was a flawed system, where money was sent to too many people who didn't really need it. The good news is, that there is still a fund for the poorest people who actually need the money, and it will be decided by the school, not the government who gets it.

No but it was flawed system but it enable and empower so many young people to take part in Level 3 Education that's A levels folks and other after GCSE and Further Education course which is not a bad thing. I am really worried about the rising in youth unemployment due to to that lack of students staying on to do A levels or other courses after GCSE because of lack on financial support this September... Read more

When a job in a Supermarket can make anyone £120 a week I find it hard to see how £30 will be inspiriation enough for anyone to continue on in education. Most people stay on regardless of the money because they see the value of getting A Levels and a degree. For those who cannot afford to stay on, the money is still there. to assume a large rise in under 18 unemployment as a result is naive.

More needs to be done to help prisoners i.e focuss on personal development and rehabilitation, not just "lock them up and throw the key away"!

Could we lobby for an initiative whereby Supermarkets throwing away food that is mis-shapen or simply passes its display-until date, are encouraged instead to donate this food to homeless shelters as opposed to simply binning it?

Poll question
There should be a law passed to oblige supermarkets to donate leftover food to homeless shelters & food distribution charities.

agreed. changing consumer attitude (and supermarket owner/food outlets could do to change too). raising awareness of poverty in the uk is important. The trussell trust, the food charity is a vital link for people who have no food due to various reasons such as job loss low pay, difficulties meeting the rent/mortgageand so on

I would like it to be illegal for supermarkets to lock their bins or pour bleach in them!

I have done a little research into why this isn't happening currently. Supermarkets fear that if someone were to become ill as a result of ingesting their unwanted food then they would be liable to potential huge law suits. So for it to move forward, there would almost have to be legislation regarding no legal action be taken against the Supermarkets if someone were to fall ill as a result of eating... Read more

Hi David sorry for the late reply. Have you seen the charity fareshare? http://www.fareshare.org.uk/ They seem to get surplus food from supermarkets and the food industries. Some of the places I volunteer with use this food. It's a really great scheme!

I heard that the supermarkets are worried that people who skip food will sue them if they are poisoned and also I heard they won't give away food... Read more

I suspect if voting was compulsory, "none of the above" would win most seats.

Change for the better: The end of EMA

For those not up-to-date with your further education-related news, the current system of grants to students aged 16-19, the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), is to be cut by the Coalition government. Education Secretary Michael Gove announced that the budget for these grants will drop from £560m to £180m, and a new bursary scheme will be put in its place... Read more

i also experienced one class mate at college from divoirced parents who took advantage of the system. fair enough to remove these cases. but 'improving the system' and making it work better and for those in the most need, surely doesn't mean cutting it by 66%? the NHS has some people who take advantage of the system, but we shouldn't cut that by two-thirds. I hope I'm wrpong, and this change doesn... Read more

I noted that from this there was another major loophole. Those children whose parents were self employed and had an "unstable" business could claim EMA in the possibility that their parents business would leave them with nothing. Again it is the problem with monitoring as someone ended up having 2 X-Boxes, a new I-Phone, I-Pod touch, a new car and driving licence and having nights out to local nightclubs... Read more

The students on EMA at my sixth form go on holidays to new york, shop in selfrridges and Jack Wills, and spend a few nights a week getting drunk in town. I don't get EMA, I havent ever been abroad, and my last holiday was 3 years ago - 2 weeks in the lakes. I shop in River Island and H&M and dont go out drinking! I turn up to my classes and im working hard to go to uni to study law. It has always... Read more

A girl at my school who lived with her mother who had a household income of nil got full EMA. What wasn't taken into account was her father was a multi-millionaire living in Dubai. On her 17th birthday she was bought a mini cooper convertable. Tighter controls on where the money is going can mean the smaller amount of money can do just as much good.
