Hello Everyone,

I help out at youth clubs and and vollunteer with the NVYA. There is one issue that I still see happening in day to day life and thats BULLYING! I don't feel that there is enough support in place for victims who are bullied. I think there is more that can be done - I would like to set up a campaign to beat bullying once and for all. It took me a while to decide on a name for this... Read more

...to clarify my point..the notion of 'stamping it out' sounds as though it falls in-line with previously used disciplinary measures. As an alternative I recommend taking a look at Community Model in Corrections: http://www.youtube.com/user/CommunityModel
Or watch season four of The Wire. They introduce a learning and development scheme for school bullies, or lets say, kids capable of murder. Yes... Read more

i dont think u can beat bullying but there are ways of helping i have been a victim of bullying for many reasons and it has had a great effect on my confidence and self esteem my mum has always told me people bully because they feel insicure about themselves but in my eyes this makes no sense because i have been bullied i am insicure but i dont go out and bully.

As well as helping victims, bullies should be helped to see why what they do is wrong and try to help with the underlying causes. A lot of schools teach that bullying is wrong but when bullying happens they don't try to find out why it happened. Bullies do tend to feel insecure and need to feel in charge, so maybe helping with self-esteem for both bullies and victims?

I've noticed that a lot of discussions on here are negative-focussed: what's wrong with the government, the Big Society agenda, etc.

How about a more positive thread?

If the government has got it all wrong and doesn't understand young people, then what volunteering have you done recently? What's important in your community? Do you work in an area, or study something you really love? What are your... Read more

How is it that the Government are trying to promote Volunteering in their new 'Big Society' Initiative yet they are cutting funding for the Vinvolved and Vtalent projects which is all about Young People Volunteering?????

I am loosing my entire Youth Service because of these cuts. I have been a volunteer at Carterton Youth Centre for the best part of four years, but I wouldn't be able to run my... Read more

I'm really sorry to hear about the issues you are having. It sounds as though you've been doing something really worthwhile and it's such a shame that your not getting enough support. It seems to be the story across the board when it comes to the voluntary sector, and some people have a strange perception that because people don't get paid for their time it doesn't cost anything to keep it going... Read more

Well exactly.... If they are going to make cuts they need to look at maintaining financial support for the premises, bills etc. and then look at designating the HUB workers certain youth centres to overlook and act as a line manager or something so that it could encourage people to actually want to volunteer in our youth centres. Perhaps even look at providing training so that the volunteers can... Read more

There's a group of MPs doing an inquiry into youth services who want to hear what young people (aged 13-25) have to say about youth services outside of school in their area. The Education Select Committee has teamed up with The Student Room to ask about your experiences. Go to http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/Parliament_wants_your_view to tell them what you think. Your comments will contribute... Read more

I've been apart of a v-talent group working with young adults with learning disabilities and it has given me beneficial experience to provide me with direction. So therefore when i found out that V were not being funded anymore my opinion is a lot of young people who are unsure of their strengths will miss out on a great oportunity to volunteer which will be a big shame. they want youngsters to... Read more

Well I would like to say that to me when children and young people are growing up a vital part of their social development and self confidence is due to their friendship links if any. With friends you can chat, have a laugh, moan about your parents, gossip about boys/girls, and tend to be more yourself. When you go through school yes you may have petty arguements and say things to your friends that... Read more
