Yesterday v's Chief Exec Terry Ryall and members of v's youth advisory board v20, attended an event where the Prime Minsiter spoke about his plans to make Big Society his mission. Read on to see what Terry has to say about the event:
'Well, yesterday I and a few v20 heard from the man himself why he is recommitting to his Big Society idea. After the furore of last week speculators half expected... Read more

Thank you for paying your taxes. Now kindly volunteer your time doing things people were once paid to do. This is
A: Because DC told you to
B: Because of the cuts we can't afford to pay people
C: seeing as you don't have a job, you now have plenty of time to volunteer
Perhaps DC should lead by example ...

Why is money in charge of life ?

Because it gives our civilization some kind of order. I'm not saying that it couldn't be distributed more fairly because it definitely could, but it gives people who do jobs that don't have a physical reward in themselves (such as a doctor) pay for their work. There, you have a reply :)
So David Cameron said yesterday he is going to give Pakistan £650million of tax payers money in aid, to help with schooling over there.
What do you think about this?
Do you think this is a good thing, that we are helping there country or do you think David Cameron could have used that money better for example to help all the services that are getting cut at the moment?

Depends. If it was only going to be spent on something relatively useless like opera anyway, then why not spend it on teaching little kids to read, even if they're foreign?
Jennifer Stevens
I think this is crazy, yes there are children in other countries who should have a right to an education, but there are also people in our own country who cant afford to live a decent standard of life and cant afford to pay their bills because of the amount of rightfully earned money that is taken off them every pay day. Also, as we are a country in recession isn't it just common sense not to give... Read more

There's no reason why every child in this world shouldn't have the same level of education as what we do in the UK. Yes we are in a recession and I don't agree with a lot of the spending cuts, however Pakistan are a lot worse of than we are, so I can't fault the governmentfor their decision to do so.
Kathy Marshall
We're not actually as poor as politicians like to claim we are. But however skint Britain was, we'd still give aid. It's a political decision, we don't just do it out of the goodness our our hearts. Politicians do it because they think it will benefit Britain too, usually.
Demi Sharman
i think it is a good idea for our government in wanting to help out children in Pakistan but, rather than just sending loads of money they should sent out organisation too. They need to make sure that the money we give does benefit the children and not just some politiction in Pakistan.
In theory as well as practice is the belief of a Big Society helpful, or not, to young people?
Is the NCS likely to be effective?
Are young people being labelled?
Are young people more likely to participate or rebel?
Is the NCS likely to prove attractive, if so to who and why?
How much ownership do young people have?
Is young people’s ‘deviant’ or criminal behaviour likely to be reduced... Read more

Hi Terry - some big topics there! Some of these have been discussed elsewhere on the site, and we're actively running polls to pull together some data around these topics. We'd love to hear your views in more detail. Are you conducting research? We'd be happy to discuss that: mybigsociety@vinspired.com

if the big society is such a good idea, surely it would be hypocritical of Cameron to accept such a high salary for a job he is delegating to the rest of society?
perhaps david Cameron should donate his salary and volunteer to do his own job
lead by example....just a thought.

YouTube's World View programme, in partnership with Al Jazeera, is inviting people to submit questions to Mr Cameron about domestic AND foreign policy.
So whatever you're concerned about - the economy, education, health, or the big society - just go to www.youtube.com/worldview to submit your question in either video or... Read more

By making the Big Society his personal ‘mission’ David Cameron appears to be staking his reputation as Prime Minister on a project that many believe is doomed to fail.
This is a project which Cameron was under no obligation to assume such individual responsibility for and one which – given time and the right amount of spin – could have been made to fade into the background long before it became... Read more

it may be just me, but I feel David Cameron has come up with this idea to try and distract us from some of the outrageous decisions he's already made that relate to the younger section of society, in my opinion he's saying he'll listen to our opinions and what we think of new laws and legislations, but what are the odds that the government will actually listen? to me this big society is probably... Hi Sean - seems like you're echoing a view shared by other people on this site, who feel that government is not really listening. So...what can we do to encourage our elected representatives to listen to us? It seems like traditional ways of engaging with politicians aren't always that effective.
I recently wrote to my MP (in the traditional way) about the credit regulation bill. I asked him if... Read more

well its a lose-lose situation, when we try and organise a protest to view our oppinions on thing, you will always get the odd one or two who go to far, whether it's because of desire to stand out, or just getting carried away with in the emotion of the protest
but like with your example if we write to our MP very often it doesn't seem to make it very far and the answers we get are the same answers... Read more

So, who's been following this week's argument between Dame Elisabeth Hoodless and the big man himself, David Cameron?
Dame Elisabeth (also dubbed 'The Mother of Volunteering') is the retiring CEO of Community Service Volunteers, and she's come out fighting! She reckons the government's Big Society ideas is being undermined by savage spending cuts, which have not been properly planned. What's the... Read more

Francis Maude quoted on the BBC website. ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12381794 )
"You've got to bear in mind that three quarters of voluntary organisations get no funding from the state at all so they are not going to be damaged by the cuts in council spending."
Another way of looking at it?
Tracey Herald
Hmm - perhaps. Although its likely that many of these charities are instead reliant on individual donations from members of the public - and of course volunteers to help them deliver services and support.
Lack of investment in volunteering, shrinking corporate invesmtment and reduced support for voluntary sector membership organisations and infrastructure bodies will surely make things more difficult... Read more

WE SHOULD ALWAYS LISTEN TO MOTHER!
Tracey Herald
Hi Myriam - my you're busy commenting on posts today! So...you agree with Elisabeth then?
Apparently, David Cameron is trying to get the big TV companies to hand over free advertising time to encourage people to get involved in their communities.
Do you think TV ads would persuade you to get involved? Or if not, what would?
Myriam Roberts
TV adverts would raise the profile of youth volunteering1
Charlotte Beckett
Good thought Myriam, but when a lot of the media is struggling to make money, should the government really get free advertising? And aren't other, cheaper ways of marketing more effective?
Myriam Roberts
when you put it like that it does seem unfair.
